Diana Powell

Diana Powell graduated with a Double First in Textile Design from Birmingham Polytechnic in 1991. Since then she has produced design and illustration work for Sustrans, CycleCity Guides and others. She has a long association with A to B, and is responsible for several long-lived designs and illustrations that still appear in the magazine, including the 'flying lady' logo on the frontispiece. Recently, she has produced a music poster for us - nothing to do with transport, but it's so scrummy, we've reproduced it below. Diana has just set up a freelance illustration business in Bristol and is looking for all sorts of work: dianampowell@googlemail.com

The Heavy Burden
Linocut on Somerset cotton paper
230mm x 190mm

September 11th 2001. We emailed all of our New York subscribers and one, Cordelia Rose, responded with a breathless message some of which had been written at her desk within minutes of the tragedy. Cordelia agreed to publication, and we commisioned John to interpret the text - no easy task.

False Gods
Linocut on Somerset cotton paper
230mm x 200mm

In the aftermath of September 11th 2001, the US gets to grips with the Taliban in Afghanistan, while at home... Railtrack calls in the receivers. John's brief was to bring the two issues together in one linocut. How about asking the Taliban to sort out Railtrack's 'fat-cat' directors?

Fay Presto (Pen & Ink)

Entertainer Fay Presto is reported to have bought an electric scooter on the rather unusual promise that a crash-helmet would not be required - essential for preserving her hair-do. The case against her was dropped, when the judge accepted that she had been mislead by the importers. Helen captures the essential elements of the story...
